Snow Days--the students' friend, or the parents' nemesis?

Here is another e-lesson for you.  Remember that there are 3 others posted on this blog that you can choose from.  You need to either submit your assignments online and I will forward them to each teacher or you need to make a hard copy to turn in to show your teacher that you finished the assignments.  This will count as your attendance for each e-day.  Also, remember that you have 2 weeks after we go back to school to get these assignments turned in.  I'll be collecting all of the assignments submitted, so keep 'em coming!

Reading first...

Now sit down with a great book and read for 30 minutes.  Remember that at school you have to focus on a book or two and just read and think about what you're reading.

You can practice your high frequency words by playing Sight Word Bingo for 10 minutes.

Math time!
We've been practicing multiplication and division.
Whack-A-Troll
Demolition Division
Swimming Otters
Work on your facts for 15 minutes.  Remember that you NEED to use a chart to find your answers.  This is how you learn your facts right now.
Here's a fact practice sheet.  It does not have to be done in 5 minutes.  For those who need something a bit less challenging, click here.  Be sure to print your work off, complete it, and turn it in.
Next you need to choose a lesson to watch and do this study sheet.  You will need to print it out and turn it in.
Watch this lesson to review fact families
Watch this lesson to review arrays
Watch this lesson to review equal groups
Watch this lesson to review equations

Writing journal--you can do you writing on a piece of paper or a notebook.  Be sure to save it to turn in!  Or you can do your writing on the e-journal.

For social studies take some time to review the continents:

E-lesson 3

E-Day 3!

We start the festivities with READING today!
Begin your learning by finding a good book that you are reading or by clicking on We Give Books for an e-book to read.  Be sure that you choose a book that isn't too hard or too easy.  Read your book, then fill out the Reading response log.  You can also write your response on paper and turn it in when you come back to school.
Get more books or a chapter book and settle in for 30 minutes of independent reading--just like you do at school.
Practice identifying antonyms here.  Then practice putting words in ABC order here.

Now for some math!  We've been working on multiplication and will work on division as well today.
Click on these links and practice for 15 minutes
 Pirate Ship
Snowy's Friend
Granny Prix

Here's a practice sheet for you to print off, finish and turn in:  Circle Multiplication  or you may do this Mine Craft bow.  Look at the bottom to find what colors to use.
Need a multiplication chart?  Here you go!

Then take a quiz:

Multiplication quiz  Be sure to print out your results to turn in with your other lessons.
****DON'T WORRY IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PRINTER.  JUST GO BACK UP AND PLAY THE GAMES FOR AWHILE MORE.  The point is that you are practicing multiplication!

Now start learning division.  Remember that multiplication and division are best friends, but are also opposites.  With multiplication, you start with equal groups and multiply those groups by a number to get your product.  When you divide, you start with a total number and then act like you're in a card game and "deal."  Either you give a certain number to each player, or you know the number of players and deal out the cards until the total is done.  Here is a game that shows you how to divide:

Now for some writing journal practice.  Write a fiction story about a magical snow day.  Is there magic in the snow and in the wind?  What happens to the characters in your story and what are those characters like?  Use your imagination to write your story.  Post your journal entry here.

Time for science!!! Learn more about the weather and climate by watching this Study Jam.  Take the quiz, then fill out this form.  Remember that you can write your answers on paper to turn in later, too.

Optional experiment
Today you'll see how it can freeze almost instantly!  Get your parent or and adult to help you with this and be sure to BUNDLE UP when you go outside.
Run your tap until the water is quite hot.  Fill a large cup or glass, then color the water with food coloring.  Go outside and hold on to the cup or glass and throw the water up into the air (carefully, please!).  Watch how the water freezes.  You might see the colored pieces of ice lying on the snow.  Cool, huh?  Record what you did here.

I hope you enjoyed learning today!

Welcome Eaton Third Graders

By now you probably know that the links for third grade E-day lessons on the Eaton City School's site isn't working properly and you've been directed here for your lessons.  If you scroll down this page, you'll find 2 days worth of lessons.  These lessons are more of a challenge for the average third grader.  Those who would like lessons that are a bit slower paced, please go to Mrs. Martin's U for your lessons.  These lessons are appropriate for students who work with Mrs. Donaldson for reading and or math.
Mrs. Martin and I will be monitoring these sites all day, so don't hesitate to email questions.
Have fun!
Mrs. Wike

Brrrr!!

Let's find out about this crazy thing called WEATHER today!  Remember that you need to do all of the activities either online or on paper in order for your work to count.
First, learn just why we're having this extremely cold weather today.  Watch Study Jams Weather and Climate and take the quiz.  Then do this activity:  Weather and Climate extended response  If you can't submit the work online, copy your answers on a sheet of paper.
Then have fun playing Ed Heads Weather Game.

Optional activity:
Get a container that can hold water.  You might want to get one with a lid.  Try this experiment;
How Cold Is It?
If we are out of school again tomorrow, we'll try this again, but I'll show you a trick!

Now for some math:
***Mrs. Wike's math students may also click on the tab for lessons on fractions if you'd like***

What is multiplication?  We know that we can solve multiplication problems using repeated addition, but we can also make equal groups and arrays.  Try it!  Multiplication Explorer
Let's practice some facts:
Snowman Fun
Snowboard Challenge
Cone Crazy II

Now take a quiz:
Fact Quiz

Time for some reading practice!  Let's work on finding the main idea of a selection:
Main Idea
You also need to practice identifying synonyms and antonyms with this game:
Ghosts in the Graveyard

Get a good book and sit down with it for 30 minutes of independent reading.  Remember, READING IS THINKING!  Click here for a great assortment of e-books to read right now.  You may have to sign up for an account, but it's FREE!!  Type your reading responses here or write your answers on paper.
One of our goals this year is to read and spell high frequency words quickly.  Here's some practice:
Everglades  Watch the video, then play the game.

Now take some time for writing journals.  You may use a journal that you have at home, or use this form.  As usual, you may write anything that you'd like, or respond to a couple of these questions:
What makes you happy on days like these when you have to stay in the house?  What do you do?
Writing Journal  **Remember that your response should be just like what you would do at school.  That means 5-7 good sentences that stay on topic.

I hope you stay warm and safe today.  I hope you are a joy to your parents and that you are helpful to them as you stay in.
Mrs. W

Yay! Snow Day! E-day lesson 3 January 20, 2016

Let's review some multiplication, learn about the earth and read a myth!  You will also read and do some writing.  Do the activities in any order that you would like.
Mrs. W.

Go to Snowball Fight and have an indoor snowball fight while practicing your facts!!  Play for 10 minutes.

Lastly, take a fact quiz.  Good luck!

Now to review landforms and learn about the earth!
Choose either the landform or volcano activity to complete.
Post your answer to these questions in the comments or write them on a sheet of paper.  Be sure to use complete sentences!
  1. What are three ways that land is formed?
  2. What type of landform is close to Eaton, Ohio?  How do you know?
  3. What is erosion?
Here is a fun video about volcanos.
Get a sheet of paper and fold it into fourths.  Write the main idea at the top.  In each of the four squares write the four types of volcanos.  Draw an illustration of each and describe what that volcano is like.  Order the volcanos from the least dangerous to the most dangerous.  On the back tell why you think some people choose to live areas close to volcanos and whether or not you think this is a good idea.  Be sure to write 4-5 good sentences that explain your ideas clearly.  Use correct spelling and vocabulary!

How about reading a myth?
Click on the link to read a myth.  Try reading it with the sound turned off or listen and follow along.

In the story the author says that Arachne was "arrogant."  What is a third grade synonym for this word?  Find one using the  Thesaurus.  Look for an antonym as well.  You can use this link for your assignment:
Or, take a sheet of paper and fold it in fourths.  You will be using the front and the back.  On the front, number the sections 1-4.  Tell the important events from the story using a complete sentence and a picture.   Then write your synonym and antonym for the word arrogant and tell why Arachne was arrogant.  In the next two, choose a word that the author used to describe Athena.  This is a characteristic!  Use the Thesaurus link to find a synonym and antonym for your word.  Write your words in the last two sections and tell how this is a characteristic of Athena.
Now watch Arachne spinning her web!  Do you suppose this story is where the word "arachnid" came from ?

I hope you had fun learning today!
